One of the most respected brands in the golfing world has released a new series of cavity backs, the Callaway Mack Daddy CB Wedge!

These clubs are specially designed to impart high spin to every shot. With their larger clubface, they make a great option for the bottom of your bag. These Callaway wedges also come in a wide variety of bounce and loft combinations, whilst the design is sleek, modern, and somewhat unconventional.

Callaway Mack Daddy CB Wedge

9.0Our Score

The deep cavity back design allows a flawless transition from cavity back irons. This keeps your swing consistently reliable as you change between clubs easily.
A wide range of lofts are available (46° – 60°) so you can find the perfect fit for your set of clubs.
The JAWS grooves unique to Callaway provide maximum grip and spin from all types of lies. The higher loft wedges also have full face grooves for exceptional forgiveness.
Callaway have also partnered with Golf Pride to offer an all-new SG-1 short game grip for enhanced control.

The Aesthetics

Callaway is one of the best-known manufacturers and are certainly not scared of pushing the envelope when it comes to club design.

Here at Unique Golf Gears, we are big Callaway fans, and the Mack Daddy CB wedges are no exception. They have an appealing, contemporary look to them without being over the top. In our opinion, some manufacturers try too hard, and they end up looking garish and ugly.

The cavity back has a clean look with some nice intricate detail making for a professional appearance on the course. We especially like the almost frosted, yet clean, design of the cavity. This is not a crisp, slick blade-style wedge, but equally it’s not a matte black and electric blue detailed piece of modern art pretending to be a golf club!

The Mack Daddy CB Wedges could pair nicely with the Callaway Golf Rogue ST Max OS Iron Set as they play well together.

Callaway have gone all out with this offering of wedges. Giving us an extensive selection of 8 different loft options in the Mack Daddy CB wedge line. This means that you can build the perfectly cohesive set starting at pitching wedge. This is down to personal preference as most iron sets will also have a pitching wedge offering.

One of the most significant aspects of the aesthetics of the Mack Daddy CB wedges is the full face of JAWS grooves. Although this is only for the 54 degrees and higher (46-52 degrees have conventional grooves). It does look a little strange in the bag but after a few rounds on the course, they will definitely grow on you!

Compared to their MD5 JAWS lineup, Callaway have made this wedge a little sturdier and brawnier. But that doesn’t mean it will look out of place with other styles of irons in your bag. We think that this is by far a better option than continuing into the wedge versions of your iron set which can often be heavy and unwieldy.

All in all, the Mack Daddy CB wedge is a good-looking club for sure!

The Feel

We tested the Callaway Mack Daddy CB wedge for a couple of rounds and this clubs feel can be described in one word…EFFORTLESS!

This is one of the most forgiving wedges we have tested in a while. Some wedges are only forgiving in a slight manner where you still must be pretty accurate. The Mack Daddy however is forgiving across the entire clubface.

This can actually take some getting used to. In fact, you’re likely to have the same feeling whether you connect directly to the sweet spot or if you slice a bit on the thin side. This may give you slightly less fingertip feedback.

But the results you will see massively outweigh this fact for the vast majority of players. This wedge has a smooth, secure feel that will give you confidence in your approaches. You can relax away from the anxiety of a less forgiving club, get out of your own head, and simply enjoy your round.

The Sound

Ok UGG gearheads, this may be the most meaningless and also oddly satisfying criteria for a golf club, but the sound actually does matter! It gives you a sense of connection, being one with the club. That being said, it is kind of hard to find any new words to describe something so subjective and down to personal preference.

It may actually be easier to describe what it is not. It is not a dull thud, nor a tinny ding. The sound is more like a finger snap. A good solid sound with a clean, crisp contact. Plus, as many of these wedge options come with a relatively high bounce, you’re likely to get a nice thud as you occasionally push around some turf. All in all, and great sounding stroke.

The Performance

The Mack Daddy CB wedge from Callaway does many things well, but not everything. That is how it was designed! During our review, we found that this club excels at what you might call “stock” shots. There are other wedges with a superior distance and length. But that is not what we are looking for with this club. We are searching for consistency and reliability. Using this wedge makes it incredibly easy to know the distance you are going to achieve before you step up to take your approach shot.

We recommend taking this down to a range a few times and experimenting with full blooded swings as well as ¾ swing glides and ½ swing digs. It shouldn’t take long for you to build excellent dependability. This may be a great club for quickly improving your handicap.

The Mack Daddy CB wedge is also a great choice from close range. The forgiving nature of this club means you have the entire club face to work with. Allowing you to get a good amount of spin from just about anywhere. Honestly, it is harder to miss the face than to hit a nice stroke.

That’s not to say that this club is perfect by any means. The super delicate “touch” shots are actually a little tricky. This is especially true for flops, except those from the sand or the rough. This clubs excels at shots that require a high bounce. But the low checker is a bit more precarious and takes some practice to get good.

In our opinion, this is a reasonable trade off though. This club is designed to bring consistency to your most frequent approach shots. Some rarer, trickier, approaches may require a more specialist club choice.

Pros & Cons

Pros

  • Excellent loft selection
  • Great backspin creation
  • Immensely forgiving

Cons

  • Due to its forgiveness it lacks a little fingertip feel

Final Thoughts – Callaway Mack Daddy CB Wedge

Overall, we cannot recommend this club enough. The Callaway Mack Daddy CB wedge is an excellent choice to increase the dependability of your standard approach shots. Far less precision is required to get good with this club. Just walk up to the ball, give a clean stable swing and the club will do the rest, making your shot game as hassle free as possible.

You won’t have the same versatility provided by the MD5 JAWS and it doesn’t have the same versatility. But if you are looking for a safe and secure feeling wedge which is very forgiving, then you should definitely consider the Callaway Mack Daddy CB wedge!
