Polara Golf Balls Review

Golf has continuously embraced technological advancements to enhance the players’ experience and performance. Among the recent innovations in the golfing world, one controversial development has been a hot topic of discussion: self-correcting golf balls. And the most famous and best example of these is probably Polara golf balls.

For years, golfers have strived to improve their swing accuracy and distance control, seeking that elusive perfect shot. Today, golfers can reap the remarkable advantages of self-correcting golf balls, all made possible by groundbreaking advancements in materials science and aerodynamics.

The concept behind these extraordinary balls lies in their ability to autonomously correct the flight path mid-air, minimizing the effect of errors caused by mishits and misalignments. Designed using advanced sensors and intelligent algorithms, these self-correcting golf balls are meticulously crafted to deliver an unmatched level of precision and consistency.

Imagine a scenario where a golfer hooks the ball, only to witness it subtly altering its trajectory, ultimately landing near the intended target. This seemingly futuristic technology holds the promise of revolutionizing the game, giving golfers of all skill levels an opportunity to unlock their full potential.

Polara Golf: A Brief History

Polara Golf, a renowned name in the golfing industry, has a fascinating history that revolutionized the way golfers approach the game. The company’s origins can be traced back to the early 1970s when a team of scientists and engineers set out to solve a persistent problem faced by golfers worldwide: reducing the effects of hooks and slices.

Led by Daniel Nepela and Fred Holmstrom, the Polara Golf team conducted extensive research and experimentation to develop a golf ball that would minimize the dreaded slice and hook, which often caused shots to veer off-course. After years of dedication and innovation, the team introduced the first Polara golf ball in 1977.

What set Polara Golf apart was its utilization of an aerodynamic design featuring a unique dimple pattern. This pattern helped the ball correct its flight by reducing the drag on one side, thereby counteracting hooks and slices. The result was a golf ball that allowed golfers to hit straighter shots and keep the ball on target.

Legal Troubles

Despite Polara golf balls meeting athe regulations at the time, the United States Golf Association (USGA) soon changed the rules, effectively banning them from official tournaments. This led to a lawsuit between the company and the association. After a seven-year dispute, the USGA agreed to pay Polara US$1.4 million under the condition that the ball was removed from the market.

Despite facing regulatory challenges from golf’s governing bodies, Polara Golf gained a loyal following of recreational golfers who appreciated the ball’s ability to improve their game. Throughout the years, the company diligently honed its technology and diversified its product range, unveiling tailored models that catered to the specific needs of players.

Today, Polara Golf remains a leading brand in the golfing world, continuing its mission to enhance the golfing experience through innovative and performance-driven products. The history of Polara Golf stands as a testament to the remarkable influence a single invention can have on an entire sport, highlighting the immense power of ingenuity.

Polara Ultimate Straight

8.5Our Score

Polara claim that the Ultimate Straight ball can reduce hooks and slices by 75%. This means that if you normally slice the ball 80 yards, this would be reduced to just 20 yards.
During our test, we did find that the ultimate straight ball was actually as advertised. Our tee shots were flying straight down the center of the fairway virtually every time. Even some complete miss hits that would normally have ended up in someone’s pint at the clubhouse bar managed to stay vaguely on the course, albeit in the rough.
These Polara golf balls are very impressive, although there are a few things to mention.
Firstly, the trajectory of the flight is quite low. Polara suggest using a driver with a loft of at least 10.5 degrees and they are absolutely right. Anything less than this and you sacrifice a lot of distance.
Secondly, you must place the ball on the tee the correct way. There is an arrow on the ball itself that you should aim in the line of your shot. But not really too much of a hardship.
Finally, we strongly recommend that you switch out balls when using irons, wedges, or putters. While these are excellent balls for drivers and fairway woods, they were pretty inconsistent for any other club. Several approach shots and putts absolutely flew of the clubface and were massively overhit.
All in all, very impressive. Worth the price for recreational golfers looking to get more enjoyment out of their leisurely Sunday round.

Polara Extra Distance

8.5Our Score

Polara claim that the Extra Distance ball can reduce hooks and slices by 50%. This means that if you normally slice the ball 80 yards, this would be reduced to just 40 yards.
During our test, the extra distance part was definitely true. We were consistently adding 10-20 yards to our drives compared with the ultimate straight balls. So, first part, check.
After testing the 75% flight correction we did notice a drop in accuracy. However, when we switched back to regular, tournament legal balls, the advantage was clear. The Polara Extra Distance balls flew far straight than standard an consistently further than the ultimate straight.
The flight trajectory was also more ‘normal’, in the sense, that it wasn’t as low as the others. The loft of your driver is also less important as you do not need to generate the height yourself.
Again, be sure to place the ball correctly with the arrow lined up with your shot for best results.
Slightly better suited to those players with a fairly mechanical swing. If you tend to lose half a dozen balls per round, probably best to stick to the ultimate straights!

Polara Extra Spin

9.0Our Score

The Polara Extra Spin is also advertised as 75% flight correction, same as ultimate straight. Once again, from the tee these balls are fantastic. Beautiful shots straight down the middle of the fairway just make you feel happy.
We do have similar drawbacks though. Again, the trajectory is quite low so once again this may limit your choice of driver to those with a higher loft.
However, some of the problems with the ultimate straights have disappeared. Mainly, the short game.
The extra spin makes the feel much more friendly for irons and wedges. Approach shots were much simpler, no worries about an inconsistent contact or overshooting the green here.
We were able to get good height on flops and the high spin allowed for some wicked backspin, making for some stunning set ups.
Once again though, putting is not something this ball is good at. It seems all Polara balls just don’t get on with putters. They seem much happier when they’re airborne.
